INAUGURATION DAY–1932–IN GERMANY

If the timing of my posting of this fascinating Fox Movietone newsreel seems heavy-handed, well, we live in awfully heavy-handed times. Watch as Adolf Hitler comes to power, addresses his crowds, cordially greets his new fellow government wonks and listen as the assumption is made that he seems willing ‘to compromise’ and not be the hard-liner that some already feared. Odd that Fox, of all companies is the one American newsreel that covered this…

  1. Zanuck, I’ve heard, was, and perhaps this is an example, trying to call attention to what was going on in Germany to people in the United States who by and large didn’t know and didn’t care, or so he felt. The U.S. in general didn’t want anything to do with the troubles of Europe and kept out of both World Wars for as long as possible. One fun fact, Hitler and the Nazi’s are given credit for the famous AUTOBAN express way. It was something Hitler and the Nazi’s took credit for, but it was a holdover from the previous administration, so to speak, that he/they took all the credit for. Looking at Hitler as a political figure and how he worked within the system for as long as possible, you see how people before and since have also succeeded in upturning and taking over total power by the same methods.
