I was listening to a Gilbert Gottfiried podcast while driving today in which he and his guests began extolling the remarkably varied talents of Jerry Lewis. Not only was he a comic, a director, a writer, a philanthropist but he was also…an excellent dancer? Well, sort of. It’s true that he’s a hell of a lot better than you expect. The question is: why? Did he train with anyone? (Answer: no.). Did somebody painstakingly choreograph the routine he performs in the above clip? (Again, the answer is: no–at least according to Jerry). The general consensus is that show-biz types of a certain era kind of knew how to do a little of everything surprisingly well. Jerry dances like Dean sings–in a completely untrained, singular way that is both skillful and charmingly only semi-polished–like your unexpectedly limber Uncle performing at a wedding. Jerry’s dancing partner in this clip is Sherrie North. It’s hard to describe her gimmick. Even after you watch it, it’s hard to describe it…
