JUDY GARLAND MEETS…BURT BACHARACH?

Here’s a couple of precious minutes showing Judy Garland during a run-through for an appearance on ‘Hollywood Palace’, singing ‘What the World Needs Now (Is Love Sweet Love)’. Her listless performance is a hell of a lot more fun than many singers all out, full-blown performances though its hard to tell whether she’s simply walking through the song while the cameras and orchestra figure out their place in things, or if she’s not really sure if the song is for her in the first place. (I don’t think it is). This is a ‘marking’ rehearsal and Judy, the ‘old pro’–she’s 43 here–knows enough not to expend too much of her energy on this stuff. Though that begs the question; why didn’t they use a stand-in? She loses the lyrics in the bridge but then recovers big-time at the key change as if to make up for it. And you realize that it wasn’t possible for Judy just to phone anything in. Her talent wouldn’t let itself take a break.
