Okay, I took a week’s vacation from posting and now I’m back. I was with family and, much as I love them, I kind of wish I was George Gershwin in the spring of 1937 on vacation with Paulette Goddard. The two of them were discreetly involved in a romance at the time and on one long-forgotten weekend headed to Palm Springs with a 16mm home movie camera. George apparently taught Paulette how to use it so we get individual views of both of them. George smokes a pipe. Paulette acts cute. Indeed, nobody really has a right to be as goddam cute as Paulette Goddard. Gershwin would be dead just months after these home movies were shot so watching him is more than a little haunting. Still, many men would probably consider a weekend fling in Palm Springs with Paulette Goddard a worthy enough send-off to sign up for their own end with enthusiasm.
