Let’s not be coy. I didn’t have dinner with Stephen. (Lunch once, yes, but that’s a story for another time). (And there were eight of us at the table, though I was seated next to him). But last night while eating leftovers I watched the terrific video posted above which is raw interview footage apparently shot for a doc about Leonard Bernstein. Sondheim is so charming, articulate, erudite and down-to-earth (the latter quality not usually ascribed to him by those who only know him from his somewhat aloof public profile) that the 90 minutes disappeared far too quickly, as did the leftover Chinese food I was scarfing. Don’t be daunted by the length and tell yourself that you don’t have 90 minutes to watch this interview. Tell yourself you’ll watch ten and turn it of…and then I dare you to do so.
