ORSON AND THE MARTIANS

Here is episode five of the wonderful ‘Orson Welles’ Sketchbook’ series, a group of 15 minute monologues he delivered for the BBC in 1955. Here he discusses his infamous ‘War Of The Worlds’ broadcast and even though you’ve probably heard the entire tale before–the accidentally induced mass-panic it caused ask people thought martians were really landing in New Jersey–it’s well-worth your fifteen minutes to hear OW tell it himself. Part of the charm here is that we see an odd side of Orson–that of the humorist, the impersonator, the lighthearted spellbinder. And the ending of the story–which concerns a threatened assassination attack on him in retribution for having fooled and scared so many people across the nation–is one of his slyest and most delightful wrap-ups in the series.
