It’s said that there is always time for one of three things: a cup of coffee, a bite of cheese, and a vintage airline commercial. Actually, that’s not really said by anyone. But a vintage airline commercial (or infomercial as is the case with the above) is a refreshing three-minute respite from anyone’s stressed out day. Thus I offer a 1958 look at the then new Pan Am 707 Jet Clipper, complete with lounge areas, cigarettes, playing cards, a shellfish bar, a pilot played by Don Ameche and lots of coffee, poured perilously close to the brim. Now that air travel is essentially a crowded bus ride, looks back at former luxe travel arrangements provoke envy and awe. I’d gladly overdress for a flight (and start smoking again) if this was my mode of transport.
