THE NFL MEETS…JOAN McCRACKEN?

As this week drifts on, we’re gradually getting away from my initial theme which was period football games captured on film. (This may well be a relief to some of you). Today we fall off the map completely with a terrific production number from the 1947 MGM remake of ‘Good News’, called “Pass That Peace Pipe’. (See yesterday’a post for more about ‘Good News’, a clip from the early sound version of the show and…other stuff). This number features the great and under-filmed dancer Joan McCracken, mostly known today for being Bob Fosse’s first wife. Fosse always said she’d been a great influence on him, and Truman Capote always said her real life persona inspired Holly Golightly,. If you want to read a very depressing Wikipedia entry click here and learn about Joan’s sad decline and early death. Please note: When watching the number, you have o plow through a full one-and-a-half minutes of the dopey song being sung before the dancing starts. But hang in–once they bust a move it’s a thrilling piece of choreography.
