THE WORLD OF THE 1960s COMMERCIAL

A couple of days ago I posted a reel of 1970s TV commercials. My sense was that the 70s saw an upturn in the humor and style of commercials as opposed to the style of the 50s ads which were largely straight and often painfully earnest and the 60s which I referred to as ‘arty’. But generalities do us little good so here’s a reel of 60s commercials that are decidedly a mixed bag–a couple of squaresville 50s style ads, a very odd fat-chicks-dancing for a diet food ad (which is so peculiar I would have to classify it as ‘arty’), Lucy and Desi shilling for smokes (50s again), Barbara Felton shilling for…grease??? Oh, and Slinky (fun with a wonderful toy, fun for a girl and a boy etc.) Oddest of all is the ad for the new Mercury (a car–remember?) and its wildly smooth suspension. Watch it for yourself. All I can say is Hi-Yo Platinum!
